From Monday, June 15, 2020, schools and universities are to be re-opened for final year students as part of a revised measure for fighting the deadly coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in Ghana.
The decision was taken in consultation with teacher unions whose cooperation according to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was something he “salute”.
This means final year students in junior high, senior high and universities can now resume classes and lectures ahead of the conduct of their respective final examinations.
“Indeed, final year university students are to report to their universities on 15th June, final year senior high school (SHS 3) students together with SHS 2 gold track students on 22nd June and final-year junior high school (JHS 3) students on 29th June,” President Akufo-Addo said in a televised address on Sunday night, May 31, 2020.
President Akufo-Addo explained that JHS 3 classes will comprise a maximum of 30 students in a class, SHS classes, a maximum of 25 students and university lectures should take place with half the class size.
Again, prior to the opening of schools and universities, the Ministry of Education and the heads of public and private educational institutions will fumigate and disinfect their institutions. Each student, teacher and non-teaching staff will be provided with reusable face masks by the Ministry of Education, President Akufo-Addo said.
President Akufo-Addo explained that the Minister of Education will in the coming days outline in detail the specific guidelines for the safe “re-opening of our schools and universities.”
