GES Promotion Aptitude Test Officially Begins – gespromtions.gov.gh

The Ghana Education Service (GES) announced the commencement of the GES promotion aptitude test. They announced that teachers in the country would now have to undergo the GES aptitude test before they get promoted. According to a communique by the GES, the move is to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of the promotion process.

The GES promotion process used to be conducted through interviews, however effective 10th January, 2020, the 2019 / 2020 GES staff due for promotion would have to undergo an aptitude test instead of an interview. The GES made this known in a letter shared on a facebook post that reads as below;

GES Promotion Process Review
The Ghana Education Service ( GES )has taken steps to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the promotion process. This has been done with extensive deliberation and consultation with key stakeholders and with the approval of the GES council.
THe management of the GES wishes to inform all staff due for promotion that the process has been reviewed to take the form of an aptitude test for all ranks from Principal Supeintendant to Depuety director. Officers who get promoted to deputy directorship shall be expected to attend face to face interviews if they desire to become heads of schools or any other positions that may require interviewing. The promotion process is as follows.

Assistant Director I – Aptitude Test
Deputy Director – Aptitude Test
Deputy director going for headship – Aptitude Test and headship interview
The GES will ensure that applicants for promotion receive ample notice of test dates, centers and test areas. This hass been reviewed to make it efficient and fair to all staff.

Aptitude Test Better than Interviews – NAGRAT

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) throws its support for the new directive by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to make teachers go through an aptitude test before they are promoted.

Speaking on Citi News, the President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu, stated that the GES aptitude test for promotion is better than the interview system that was being used because it eliminates the human factor, and is also less expensive. He made this known with the statement:

“People go for the interview and through some mysterious means or reasons, they are just not passed…So we have met with the GES and we have all agreed that an aptitude test depending on the rank that one finds himself will be the way to go because it takes out human influence and also contributes to the reduction of cost that leads to the delay of the interviews. So we feel that the aptitude test is the better option than the man to man interview that was leading to several problems,” he said.

Reasons NAGRAT Supports The GES Promotion Aptitude Test

In September 2019, members of the National Association of Graduate Teachers went on strike over the inability of the Ghana Education Service and the Public Services Commission to facilitate their promotions.

According to NAGRAT, the failure of the Public Service Commission to amend their records led to delays of promotional interviews. NAGRAT, therefore, called on their members who were in school to go on a strike until further notice.

After there was no change in the situation, they embarked on a strike action again in December over the facilitation of their promotions in collaboration with the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) and Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).
