Exams Invigilators at British Council Ghana

The British Council facilitates access to English language certifications and other UK qualifications through its Examinations Services. These internationally recognized qualifications empower individuals by unlocking educational, career, and personal growth opportunities, both locally and internationally. Examinations also play a vital role in enhancing teaching, learning, and professional development.

The British Council’s Examinations Services oversees a broad spectrum of UK-based assessments in collaboration with accredited awarding bodies. These include English proficiency tests such as IELTS, Cambridge English, and Aptis, academic examinations like IGCSE, O-Level, and A-Level for Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel, as well as professional certifications such as ACCA (accounting).

In Ghana, these exams are administered in multiple locations, including Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale.

As an Invigilator, you will be part of a team responsible for the smooth and secure delivery of exams at designated venues. This role requires close collaboration with British Council Examinations Services staff, venue personnel, and service providers to ensure a seamless test day experience.

 

Role Purpose

The primary objective of this role is to ensure the efficient administration of British Council exams by adhering to prescribed standards, safeguarding test integrity, and upholding security and administrative protocols.

Additionally, invigilators are responsible for delivering high-quality customer service to candidates and maintaining the British Council’s reputation.

 

Key Responsibilities

Exam Administration

  • Arrive at the exam venue punctually as per the agreed schedule. Inform the British Council Examinations Services team in advance in case of delays or inability to attend.
  • Adhere to all established procedures and standards outlined in training materials provided by the British Council and examination boards.
  • Familiarize yourself with emergency protocols at the exam venue.
  • Conduct invigilation duties in compliance with British Council and exam board standards.
  • Monitor candidates throughout the exam to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Assist supervisors in delivering a seamless test day experience and maintaining the Council’s professional image.
  • Securely manage and hand over exam materials to the supervisor.
  • Accurately document exam-related records, reports, and logs as required.
  • Uphold policies related to Data Protection, Child Protection, Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities, Diversity, and Anti-Fraud.
  • Report any irregularities, security concerns, or emergencies to the supervisor immediately.
  • Support candidate well-being by following proper procedures in case of emergencies.

Customer Support

  • Provide clear instructions to candidates to facilitate smooth exam proceedings.
  • Ensure candidates follow exam regulations regarding personal belongings and venue security.
  • Conduct entry, exit, identity verification, and Test Day Photography in accordance with exam protocols.
  • Ensure appropriate accommodations are provided for candidates requiring special arrangements.

Training & Development

  • Attend all mandatory training and briefing sessions conducted by British Council Examinations Services.
  • Complete required training modules, including those on Data Protection, Child Protection, Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities, Diversity, Anti-Fraud, and Identity Verification.

Additional Role Considerations

  • Some invigilators may need to travel, including overnight stays. Candidates will be asked to indicate their willingness to travel during the recruitment process.
  • Vigilance is crucial in observing candidates and maintaining exam integrity.
  • Although a formal uniform is not specified, attire should align with cultural expectations and the professional nature of the role. Soft-soled shoes are recommended, while noisy footwear and distracting jewelry are not permitted.

 

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Relevant experience in overseeing service delivery or production processes.

Preferred:

  • A university degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience managing tasks in a fast-paced operational setting.
  • Previous experience leading small teams or demonstrating leadership potential.
  • Proven ability to implement and sustain procedural changes.
  • Prior experience in an exams environment.
  • Experience administering computer-based exams.

 

Contract Details

  • Location: Ghana
  • Duration: Two years (renewable)
  • Consultancy Fee: 40 Cedis per hour
  • Language Requirement: English proficiency at CEFR B1 level or equivalent (e.g., IELTS 5, Cambridge English PET)
