In an interview on Citi News, General Secretary of GPRTU stated that the union has concluded discussions on the fare increment after efforts to engage government failed. This was made known with the following statements:
- “This one can no longer be a proposal. It is now a decision. Next Friday it will come to the public and all of us will see the new fares. On the 13th of this very month we will roll new transport fares. It is going to be 30%.
- Initially, we were thinking of 15% but just recently fuel prices have gone up again surprisingly.
- We wrote to the Minister indicating that we were coming to do negotiations but once that letter has not yielded results we think there is no option than to review our fares such that our members will not be operating at a loss”
Reasons For GPRTU New Transport Fares
- The decision to increase lorry fares is as a result of increases in fuel prices over the last few months. This is to ensure transport operators do not continue to operate at a loss.
- Leadership of GPRTU had earlier proposed that government scrap some taxes on petroleum products to cushion drivers and commuters, but government has rejected the proposal.
- Also in an interview with Citi News, the Industrial Relations Officer for GPRTU, Abass Imoro, said efforts to reach the Ministry concerning this have proven futile. This was also made known with the following statement:
- “We have been forced to make this decision. We were thinking of being sympathetic but government has not cooperated with us. Fuel prices keep shooting up, we wrote to the Transport Minister about our plans to increase transport fares, but we received no feedback, We will announce the new prices by next Friday”
- According to the General Secretary, the GPRTU may be forced to hold on only when government invites the leadership of the Union for discussions before the stated date.
