About Matthew Douma Jeon Somi Parents

Jeon Somi’s family background is a unique blend of South Korean and Canadian heritage. Her mother, Jeon Sun-hee, is South Korean, while her father, Matthew Douma, hails from Canada. Matthew was born and raised in a small rural town in southern Canada and has had a lifelong fascination with Asia. His first trip to Asia occurred when he was just fifteen years old.

Matthew is an avid sports enthusiast and enjoys various activities, including Taekwondo. He is also a passionate outdoorsman and adventurer, with interests in mountain climbing, sailing, and writing as his hobbies. He works as an English education consultant and author of English educational material in Seoul, where he resides with his wife, Sun Hee, and their daughter, Ennik.

Jeon Somi was born in South Korea, and her unique background reflects her diverse heritage. Her Dutch-born Canadian father, Matthew Douma, traces his roots back to Canada after his paternal grandfather immigrated from Heerenveen. The family’s move to Seoul, specifically to Yeonhui-dong, took place when Jeon Somi was just six months old, driven by her mother’s homesickness. Interestingly, her father had previously lived in the same area while pursuing his Taekwondo studies before returning to Canada.

Jeon Somi’s early exposure to the spotlight came at the age of four when she appeared on television alongside her father during a KBS News interview, where he was recognized for his role in clearing snow in the neighborhood.

Her educational journey began at a foreigner’s school before she transferred to Seoul Midong Elementary School to pursue her interest in Taekwondo. However, her school experience was marked by bullying and discrimination due to her mixed ethnicity, leading her to contemplate altering her appearance in an attempt to fit in.

Jeon Somi’s academic accomplishments include graduating from elementary school in 2013 and later completing her education at Cheongdam Middle School, where she graduated on February 3, 2017. Her secondary education concluded at Hanlim Multi Art School, where she majored in Practical Music and Vocal, graduating on February 7, 2020.

Her desire to become a singer was kindled as a child when she watched Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music” music video. Her introduction to Korean pop occurred at the age of nine, leading her to discover Park Bom of 2NE1, whom she admired for her distinctive voice.

Jeon Somi initiated her pursuit of a career in the entertainment industry by auditioning for various South Korean entertainment companies during her fourth year of elementary school.

In 2013, she made an appearance on the Children’s Day Special for Let’s Go! Dream Team Season 2 as a member of Seoul Midong Elementary School’s Taekwondo demonstration team, alongside Park Joon-hyung. During the same year, she lent her voice and presence to a music video for English education.

Jeon Somi’s journey took a pivotal turn when she left JYP Entertainment on August 20, 2018, marking the termination of her contract with the agency, following a formal discussion and mutual agreement. Subsequently, she signed an exclusive contract with YG Entertainment’s independent subsidiary label, The Black Label, home to South Korean R&B singer Zion.

Jeon Somi’s decision to join The Black Label was greatly influenced by her meeting with CEO Teddy Park. She was drawn to his authenticity and his vision for her future. She believed that The Black Label would provide her with the support and opportunity to focus on her growth as an artist and as an individual, aligning with her personal interests, rather than being solely focused on industry promotions and releases.

In recognition of her popularity as an idol promoting Korean content globally, Jeon Somi received an invitation from The Blue House to attend the 102nd anniversary of the Korean Declaration of Independence on March 1, 2021. The event, graced by South Korean President Moon Jae-in, was held at Tapgol Park in Seoul’s Jongno District. During the ceremony, she had the honor of reciting a reading from the March 1st Declaration of Independence in Korean, alongside foreign activist descendants, as a multicultural representative chosen by The Blue House.
