MoE Gives Deadline To Close Down Universities As UTAG Strike Continues

  • The immediate past spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Hon Vincent Ekow Assafuah following the prolonged UTAG strike action has stated that the industrial action may force public universities across the country to be closed down soon. This was made known with the following statements:
  • The prolonging of the industrial action may culminate in the various public universities closing down for students to return home until the impasse is resolved with the reverting of lecturers back to the lecture rooms
  • UTAG’s claims may have a legitimate basis but they should come to an amicable and appropriate medium of expressing an emphatic demand rather than resorting to a prolonged strike which is not healthy for our educational sector
  • The National Labour Commission (NLC) needs to play a pivotal role in bringing this impasse to a closure laced with mutual respect and understanding
  • The National Labour Commission (NLC) has however described as illegal the ongoing strike action by UTAG which is negatively affecting tertiary institutions in the country.
  • The Member of Parliament also stated that the members of UTAG are setting a bad precedence and that their illegal action and behaviour of unpatriotic must be condemned.
  • He urged UTAG to loosen its hardened stance and call off the nationwide industrial action that is likely to trigger the closure of universities.
  • He Expressed hope that concerns of the university teachers in the coming days will be duly resolved for normalcy to prevail, Hon Assafuah urged NLC to be an unbiased referee for the government and the teachers to reach a consensus

 

When To Close Down Universities

  • Parliament’s Education Committee is expected to meet the leadership of UTAG on Thursday on possible ways to end the ongoing nationwide industrial action. As made known by a Committee member on Citi FM last week with the following statement: “We plan to hold the meeting next week, listen to them and hopefully bring finality to the matter as we appeal to both sides
  • The decisions to close down schools will be made after the Meeting with the leadership of UTAG this week.
  • The Court have also adjourned the case involving the UTAG and the National Labour Commission (NLC) over the  strike action to Tuesday, February 15, 2022, has encouraged both parties to solve the impasse out of court.
  • Students and Stakeholders are entreated to exercise patience as the central government engage the University Teachers of Ghana to address their concerns of poor conditions of service.
  • As made known by the Ministry Communications Director told Accra-based Citi FM: “So for me, all other consequential decisions on Whether university students will stay on campus or go home could be determined after Thursday’s meeting slated for 8:AM

 

Petition To Close Down Schools

  • The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (EduWatch) has earlier petitioned the government to close down universities across the country over the ongoing strike action.
  • He said the over five weeks of the industrial action is yet to achieve any significant progress in negotiating a settlement to the impasse, therefore, it will be in the best interest of the student and their families for universities to be closed down.
  • He also stated that should the government and University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) not reach a consensus on the issue today, all government universities must be closed down to allow students to go home.
  • “There is no need to keep the students in school since they have not been matriculated and don’t know their course outlines,” the Deputy Ranking Member on Education Committee in Parliament told the host of Citi FM’s Point of View.

Oh, our motherland Ghana, when are we going to achieve our aims, I used to cry always and pity our leaders just as they dash this continent to any position they want, and from this perspective, I have witnessed that our leaders don’t care about us because, their children are studying abroad and again making bigger investments outside the country by use of the public purse (Fraudulent country Ghana)

  2. We are also tired. This is not about closing or not closing. As for me I’m already in the house for long till strike end. If any student go home, no one can arrest him or her. So you people should stop talking about closing or not closing and talk about How to resolve the strike itself.
