What is the difference between B. Sc and B. Ed?Â
- B.Sc stands for Bachelor of Science and B. Ed stands for Bachelor of Education.
- A pure B.Sc certificate is a is a Non Education Certificate but B. Ed certificate is an Education Certificate. Note: B.Sc that has an element of teaching pedagogy is considered education certificate eg. B. Sc ICT Education.
- The holder of a pure B.Sc certificate ( eg. B. Sc IT) is considered a Non-Professional teacher but a B. Ed certificate holder is a professional teacher.
- A teacher who attended training college before pursuing a pure B.Sc course is still considered a Professional teacher because he has learnt teaching methodology but if someone who pursues the same course straight from SHS is considered a non professional teacher. A Non-Professional teacher would have to do a one year post graduate diploma (PGDE) in other to be considered a Professional teacher. The professional and non professional tag is not just a title, it comes with salary difference.
- A B.Sc degree programme is designed to prepare graduates for industrial work while B.Ed degree is designed to prepare graduates to function in the classrooms. But note: they have structured some B.sc Programmes with element of teaching pedagogies eg “BSc (‘subject’ Edu)” that are meant to prepare the graduates to function both in the classroom and in other corporate organizations (this is mostly termed “double degree programme.”
- It is most likely for a B.sc holder to be employed at the education sector than a B.Ed holder in the industries. That does not also mean a B.Ed holder is limited to only the classroom or Basic school. But if you are offered the two, it is advisable to go for the B.Sc.
