Maths Textbook For Primary PDF Download
Numbers are everywhere in a Ghanaian child’s daily life. The change counted out at the market, the scores tracked during a football game in the neighbourhood.
Mathematics at the primary school level is the subject that connects all of that lived experience to formal reasoning, and the NaCCA Maths textbooks are designed to make that connection happen inside the classroom.
This post is for teachers and learners who are looking for clarity on what these materials are and how to download them.
The NaCCA Maths textbook for primary schools is a resource built for a generation of Ghanaian learners who will need to think mathematically about an increasingly complex world.

How The Standards-Based Curriculum Changed Primary Maths in Ghana
Before the 2019 curriculum reform, Mathematics in Ghana’s primary schools leaned heavily toward procedural learning. Learners were taught to follow steps and produce correct answers, but the reasoning behind those steps often received less attention. A child could correctly divide two numbers without understanding what division actually represents in a real situation.
The NaCCA Standards-Based Curriculum shifted this significantly. The current approach emphasises conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency. Learners are expected not just to compute correctly but to explain their thinking, apply mathematical ideas to unfamiliar problems, and make connections between different areas of Mathematics. This is a more ambitious target, and the textbooks reflect it in how they are structured and what they ask learners to do.
What The Primary Maths Textbooks Actually Cover
The NaCCA primary Maths curriculum is organised into five main strands that run across all six year groups with increasing complexity.
Number and numeration forms the backbone of primary Maths, covering counting, place value, fractions, decimals, percentages, and number operations. This strand takes up significant space in the curriculum because it underpins almost everything else learners will study in secondary school Mathematics.
Operations and the application of number moves beyond computation into problem solving. Learners are expected to choose appropriate operations, estimate answers, and apply number skills to real contexts drawn from everyday Ghanaian life.
Measurement and estimation covers length, mass, capacity, time, money, perimeter, area, and volume. The use of Ghanaian currency and locally relevant measurement contexts is deliberately built into this strand.
Shape and space introduces learners to two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, symmetry, angles, and spatial reasoning. Activities in this strand connect well to visual arts and everyday construction and design.
Data and probability is the final strand, introducing learners to collecting and organising data, reading charts and graphs, and making simple predictions. This strand is increasingly important in a world where data literacy is becoming a foundational life skill.
Each textbook for Primary 1 through Primary 6 covers all five strands within that year’s content expectations, with activities that range from hands-on manipulation of objects to written problem solving and group investigation tasks.
