What the NaCCA Primary Science Textbook Covers
Under the Standards-Based Curriculum introduced in 2019, Integrated Science at the primary level is organised around several interconnected strands. These include diversity of matter, which introduces learners to the properties and classification of materials around them. There is also a strand on cycles, covering natural cycles such as the water cycle, life cycles of organisms, and seasonal patterns. Forces and energy is another strand, addressing concepts like motion, light, sound, and simple machines in ways that connect to everyday Ghanaian life. The living environment strand looks at ecosystems, plant and animal life, and human health. Earth and space brings in basic concepts about the solar system, weather, and the physical features of the earth.
Across Primary 1 through Primary 6, these strands return with increasing depth. A Primary 1 learner and a Primary 5 learner both study living things, but at very different levels of complexity and analytical demand.
The textbooks are written to reflect this progression, with activities, illustrations, and language calibrated to the age and reading level of each year group.
