Understanding The GES Curriculum

The Ghana Education Service (GES) curriculum emphasizes competency-based learning, moving away from rote memorization toward practical application and critical thinking. Term 1 lesson planning must align with:
• Competency Areas: Literacy, Numeracy, Life Skills, Digital Literacy, and subject-specific competencies
• Learning Domains: Cognitive, affective, and psychomotor development
• Integration: Cross-curricular themes that connect multiple subjects
The GES framework prioritizes learning outcomes over content coverage. Your lesson plans should focus on what students can DO, not just what they know.

Guidelines

Before writing detailed lesson plans, invest time in understanding your students’ entry levels. This is especially critical in Term 1, as the gap between students from different primary schools can be significant.
What to Assess:
• Reading and writing proficiency in English and local languages
• Mathematical reasoning and numeracy skills
• Prior knowledge in science and social studies
• Attendance patterns and socioeconomic factors affecting learning
• Special learning needs (visual impairment, hearing impairment, developmental delays)

GES Lesson Plan Structure

A strong Term 1 lesson plan balances structure with flexibility.
Essential Components:

  • Learning Objective: What specific competency will students demonstrate? Use action verbs: identify, analyze, construct, apply.
  • Entry Activity (5-10 min): Activate prior knowledge. Avoid lecturing immediately. Use games, discussions, or visual stimuli.
  • Presentation (10-15 min): Introduce concept using varied media: demonstration, storytelling, visuals. Not extended lecture.
  • Guided Practice (15-20 min): Students work with teacher support. Model first, then gradually release responsibility.
Independent/Group Practice Students apply learning with peers or independently. Differentiate tasks for varied levels.
  • Closure (5 min): Summarize key points. Students reflect on what they learned and next steps.
  • Assessment Method: Observation, questioning, student work samples, or formative quiz. Not always written tests.

Practical Classroom Strategies

Managing Large Class Sizes

Many Ghanaian basic schools have 50-70+ students per class. Term 1 is ideal for establishing peer teaching systems:
• Pair stronger readers with struggling learners (buddy system)
• Form collaborative groups with mixed ability levels
• Train class monitors to support group work while you rotate
• Use wall charts and visual aids visible from all seating positions
