Computing As A Subject In Primary Schools
Under the Standards-Based Curriculum, Computing is taught as a standalone subject from the primary level. This is a deliberate recognition that digital literacy is no longer optional in the modern world, and that Ghanaian learners need to develop computational thinking and basic technology skills from an early age.
The Computing curriculum at the primary level is structured around several key strands. These include computing systems, which covers hardware, software, and how devices work. There is also a strand on networks and the internet, introducing learners to connectivity and online communication in age-appropriate ways. Data and information handling is another strand, covering how data is collected, organised, and used. The curriculum also includes a strand on computational thinking and programming, where learners develop logical reasoning through activities and simple coding concepts. Digital literacy and online safety round out the curriculum, addressing responsible and safe use of technology.
Across Primary 1 through Primary 6, these strands are revisited with increasing depth and complexity, building on what learners know from earlier years.
What the NaCCA Computing Textbooks Contain
The NaCCA Computing textbooks for primary schools are produced for each year group and are designed to be used alongside the corresponding teacher’s guide. The learner’s textbook contains explanations of concepts written in age-appropriate language, illustrations and diagrams that support understanding, activities for individual and group work, and review questions at the end of topics.
The teacher’s guide, which accompanies each textbook, contains lesson notes, suggested teaching approaches, answers to textbook activities, and guidance on how to handle topics where school resources may be limited. This is particularly relevant in Ghana where not every school has consistent access to computers or reliable internet, and the teacher’s guide acknowledges this reality and offers alternative instructional approaches.
Together, the learner textbook and teacher guide form the complete instructional package for Computing at each primary level.
